Tesla Unveils the New Roadster: Design, Performance, Trims and Production Timeline

Why the Roadster matters to Tesla

The Roadster name has a special place in Tesla history. Launched in 2008, the original model was the company’s first production car and helped prove that battery-electric cars could offer serious sports-car performance. Tesla introduced a second-generation concept in 2017, initially promising a four-seat layout, roughly 620 miles of range and deliveries starting in 2020.
The latest model represents a major reset of that concept. The design, seating configuration and claimed range have changed, while the production target has moved to 2028. As a low-volume “halo car,” the Roadster is intended primarily to showcase engineering prowess, not to become a mainstream sales driver.
An all-new design inspired by aircraft
The white Roadster shown in Texas adopts a dramatic wedge-shaped profile, with a low nose, clean body panels and a wide rear end. Compared with the curvier 2017 concept, the new design is sharper and more futuristic. Tesla has cited inspiration from aircraft such as the SR-71 Blackbird and F-35; the classic Lotus Esprit also influenced the look.
Notable features include butterfly-style doors, movable headlight panels and an active rear wing integrated into the tail. The wing can change position to add downforce or act as an airbrake. Other aerodynamic elements actively manage airflow around the body. Some prototype elements, including the use of cameras in place of conventional mirrors, will need to meet local road regulations before production.
Electric platform and powertrain
According to an in-person MotorTrend preview with Tesla designers and engineers, the Roadster uses two rear-mounted electric motors and rear-wheel drive, with updated 4680-format battery cells and a highly specialized cooling and structural package. Tesla also discussed a drive unit capable of approximately 1 megawatt of peak output, equivalent to around 1,340 horsepower. These are preliminary engineering claims, not certified final production specifications.
The car also previews steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire controls, carbon-ceramic brakes, adjustable suspension and track-oriented drive settings. The objective is to combine exceptional straight-line performance with controlled handling, though independent evaluation will have to wait until production-ready vehicles become available.
New Tesla Roadster: key announced figures
|
Specification |
Announced claim / early preview |
|
0–60 mph |
Under one second with Thrust assistance; not independently certified |
|
Top speed |
More than 230 mph (370 km/h), Tesla claim |
|
Electric range |
More than 300 miles (480 km), Tesla claim |
|

All numbers remain manufacturer claims or early engineering targets. The current driving range is notably lower than the approximately 620-mile figure Tesla discussed for the 2017 concept.
Three versions: Performance, Thrust and Rocket
• Performance — A two-seat, road-oriented model with active aerodynamic systems and high-powered underbody fans designed to increase grip. Tesla has described a sub-1.6-second 0–60 mph performance target in early previews.
• Thrust — A two-seat performance version that adds rear cold-gas thrusters to assist acceleration. Tesla claims a 0–60 mph time of under one second using this technology.
• Rocket — An invitation-only, single-seat version with ten thrusters designed for controlled short airborne maneuvers. It is not currently approved for public-road use.
It is important to distinguish the three configurations: the full airborne demonstration is associated with the specialized Rocket system, not the capabilities promised for every Roadster model.
A cockpit designed around the driver
Inside, the Roadster features a minimalist cockpit with sports seats, an angular yoke-style steering control and a landscape display angled toward the driver. A lightweight structure incorporating carbon fiber and metal alloys is intended to keep mass down. The prototype also has removable glass roof panels divided by a fixed central roof section, giving it a distinctive T-top arrangement.
Although Tesla has shown the cabin, final materials, equipment and adjustment mechanisms may evolve before customer production begins.
What SpaceX thrusters actually do
At the launch event, Tesla demonstrated a prototype climbing an inverted ramp, rotating through the air and landing safely. It also performed short jumps over other Tesla vehicles. The stunt used underbody suction fans and high-pressure cold-gas thrusters to generate grip, lift and directional control.
The Rocket version is said to use ten thruster outlets connected to pressure vessels with a combined capacity of around 600 liters. The demonstration does not establish sustained flight capability, and there is no certified flight range or public-road approval for the system at this stage.
Prices, reservations and availability
Tesla has not announced final retail prices for the new Roadster. Reuters and MotorTrend report a total reservation deposit of $50,000 for the Performance model and $250,000 for Thrust; Rocket is invitation-only. These figures are reservation payments, not confirmed vehicle prices, and a reservation does not guarantee a specific delivery date.
When does production start?
Elon Musk says Tesla is targeting production in 2028, well beyond the original 2020 timeline for the second-generation Roadster. The 2026 event should therefore be described as a reveal, not a customer launch. The company still needs to finalize production specifications, verify safety and reliability, and meet relevant road regulations.
Will the Roadster come to Saudi Arabia?
As of October 17, 2026, Tesla has not announced a Saudi launch date, local pricing or confirmed configurations for the next-generation Roadster. Any potential availability of the thruster-equipped models will depend on future certifications and local regulations.
A bold preview, with big questions still unanswered
The new Tesla Roadster offers more than an attention-grabbing airborne stunt: it introduces a new design, revised EV platform and three distinct performance ambitions. Yet pricing, final specifications, road approval and delivery timing remain key open questions. Its real-world impact will become clear only when Tesla turns the prototype into a fully validated production car.
